What exactly is SEO?

The non-sponsored results are the ones that appear because the search engine has determined they are relevant to your search. These are organic results, and they appear because of SEO.

Simply put, SEO is the practice of creating web content that search engines read as relevant to certain search queries. The more relevant your content seems for a search term, the higher you will rank in the list of results. Ranking well is critical to the success of your site. After all, when is the last time you’ve clicked through to page four of search results?

How does it work?

SEO involves an ever-changing algorithm designed by the search engine. Each search engine has its own algorithm, but a few factors are required across the board for good SEO:

  • The use of keywords that are relevant to your brand. Content should contain keywords that your customers are likely to search for online, but beware of overuse, which is called keyword stuffing. Keyword use should be natural.
  • Inbound links from other websites. The more sites that link back to you, the more authoritative your website will appear to search engines.
  • Frequent content publishing. Your website must be active and up-to-date for search engines to consider it a valuable source.
  • No duplicate content. The content of each page on your website should be unique. If you have multiple pages with the same content, your site will be penalized in results rankings.
